After your defibrillator has been used in an emergency, it’s important to follow a few simple steps to ensure it’s ready for future use. Keeping it well-maintained and restocked could save a life when it’s needed most. Here’s what to do:
Start by wiping down the defibrillator and its carrying case with an antibacterial wipe. This helps remove any contaminants and ensures that the device remains clean and safe for future use.
Inspect the defibrillator for any visible signs of damage. Make sure the device is in good working condition. Additionally, check the self-test light or indicator, if your model has one, to confirm that the device is still operational. If you’re unsure, refer to your user manual for guidance.
If the battery was used or has a low charge, you’ll need to replace it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing the battery to ensure it’s properly installed and fully charged. Keeping the battery in good condition is critical for your defibrillator’s functionality.
Make sure that disposable items, such as the electrode pads (also known as sticky pads) or razors, haven’t been used or are missing. If any of these items are used or need replacing, restock them so your defibrillator is fully equipped for the next emergency.
Once the necessary checks and replacements are made, place your defibrillator back into its designated storage cabinet or location. Ensure it’s securely stored and easily accessible for the next emergency.
If your defibrillator is registered with The Circuit, you will receive an automated email notification if the emergency services have collected it after use. This allows you to track the status of your device and ensure it’s returned to service as quickly as possible.
If you haven’t already done so, consider registering your defibrillator with The Circuit. This free, nationwide database ensures that your device is accessible to emergency services when needed, and helps improve response times for those in need of emergency defibrillation.
Taking these simple steps after using a defibrillator ensures it is ready for future emergencies. By maintaining your device properly, replacing consumables, and keeping the defibrillator in good working order, you help improve survival chances in your community.
